Devotees pray to Lord Vishnu and seek His blessings in the form of a son. Similar to Pausha Putrada Ekadashi, there is another Ekadashi called Shravana Putrada Ekadashi which is observed with the same goal.
Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is more popular in North India, while in other states more importance is given to the Shravana Ekadashi.
Pausha Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Kaise Kare?
The day of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi begins with devotees taking a holy bath and wearing clean clothes. After that Lord Vishnu is worshipped by offering Him sweets and fruits and His blessing is sought. Since Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is mainly observed for expecting a child (preferably son), it is observed by couples rather than women only.
People who observe a fast on Pausha Putrada Ekadashi normally refrain from eating or drinking anything but there are many people who eat fruits and sweets on this day. Other than this, people who do not observe fast on this day should also avoid eating rice, onion, garlic and spices. Devotees recite and listen to Pausha Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha and recite mantras to please Lord Vishnu.
Devotees only break the fast the day after Ekadashi, i.e., on Dwadashi after taking a bath and offering prayers to Lord Vishnu. On the day of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi, devotees should refrain from sleeping and instead should observe a jagran, praying and hailing to Lord Vishnu all night long.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Story
Without reciting and listening to Pausha Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha, the fasting is not complete. Simply by listening to the vrat katha, devotees can earn the fruitfulness of this vrat. The story behind this vrat has been mentioned in Bhavishya Purana.
Lord Krishna tells this story to his discipline King Yudhishthira and it goes on as follows:
Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Bhadravati that was ruled by the king Suketuman and his queen Shaibya. Their kingdom was filled with wealth and prosperity but there was one thing that covered the cloud over all the happiness that prevailed in the kingdom.
King and queen longed for a son as they were worried about who will perform the ancestral rights after the king is gone.
On the thought of this, the king got frustrated day by day and once left the palace and the kingdom. He started wandering in the forest and did the same for more than 4 days. Wandering, he reached the aashram of sages on the bank of Lake Manasarovar.
The sages asked him why he looked so sad and frustrated and the king told them his story. They suggested the king that he should start observing Pausha Putrada Ekadashi. Suketuman returned to his kingdom and told his wife what the sages has told him.
They both started observing Pausha Putrada Ekadashi with utter devotion and was blessed with a son who grew up to become a great king.
