Richard Gere was born on August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Doris Ann and Homer George Gere. His mother was a housewife while his father was an NMIC insurance agent who originally wanted to become a minister.
He went to North Syracuse Central High School where he was an expert gymnast and musician who played trumpet. Gere later went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship where he studied philosophy. After attending university for two years he dropped out without completing his graduation.
From 1971 to 1978, Richard Gere was in an on-again/off-again relationship with actress Penelope Milford. From 1978 to 1986, he dated painter Sylvia Martins. Gere first got married in 1991 to renowned model Cindy Crawford but the couple split in 1995. Crawford was among the most popular supermodels during the 1980s and 1990s.
He later married model and actress Carey Lowell in 2002 and they had one son together named Homer James Jigme Gere.

In 1969, Gere started acting at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Provincetown Playhouse. His first major acting role came in 1973 with the original London stage version of the musical “Grease”. In the mid-1970s Gere began appearing in Hollywood eefilms and was cast in the movies such as “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” (1977) and “Days of Heaven” (1978). In 1979, he became one of the first notable Hollywood actors to play a homosexual character in the Broadway production of Bent. He even earned a Theatre World Award for this performance.
Gere got his first breakthrough with the 1980 movie “American Gigolo” and his fame reached a further new height with the success of “An Officer and a Gentleman” in 1982. The movie won two Academy Awards out of six nominations and Gere himself received his first Golden Globe Award nomination. Gere kept making appearances in many hit movies over the decade and won another Golden Globe Award nomination for the highly popular 1990 movie “Pretty Woman”.
