About Shaheed Udham Singh

Udham Singh was an Indian revolutionary, known for assassinating the former lieutenant governor of the Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer. O’Dwyer was responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. Singh is referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam (meaning the great martyr) Sardar Udham Singh.

Early Life

Udham Singh was born Sher Singh on 26 December 1899 in Sunam to Narain Kaur and Tehal Singh. His father was a low-skilled low-paid manual laborer and he also had an elder brother, Sadhu. When Udham was three years old, his mother died and before he even turned eight, his father died as well. Following their father’s death, Singh and his brother were sent to an orphanage after their uncle was unable to maintain them. It was at the orphanage that Sher Singh was renamed Udham Singh. When Udham was about 18 years old, his brother too died of an unknown illness. After his brother’s demise, Udham Singh began to serve the British Indian Army during the First World War. After working here and there for a while, he returned to the orphanage in early 1919.
