Explanation to some common Trophies and Cups

Let’s go through the details of some of the most important trophies/ cup/ tournaments of various sports.

Ranji Trophy – Ranji Trophy is the most important domestic cricket tournament in India. The tournament is played between multiple teams representing regional and state cricket associations. Currently, 38 teams take part in the competition. The competition is named the Ranji trophy in honour of Ranjitsinhji who was the first Indian cricketer to play international cricket. This tournament was starting in the year 1934.

Beighton Cup – Beighton Cup is one of the oldest hockey tournaments in the world. It was started in the year 1895. The competition is organized Hockey Bengal. Earlier, this tournament was played on natural grass at the Mohun Bagan ground on the Maidan in Kolkata.

Agha Khan Cup – The Agha Khan Cup is associated with hockey. It is one of the most popular and colourful tournaments in India that invites entries from all over the country.

Davis Cup – The Davis Cup is one of the major international tournaments in men’s tennis. International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the authority that organizes this tournament. The competition started in the year 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. Please note that the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup is the Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup.

Fifa World Cup – The FIFA world cup is the most prestigious tournament of Football. It is organized  by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The first edition of the tournament was started in the year 1930. 32 teams participate in the tournament. So far, 17 countries have hosted the world cup. Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, and Mexico have each hosted twice, while Uruguay, Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, England, Argentina, Spain, the United States, Japan, and South Korea (jointly), South Africa, and Russia have each hosted once. Qatar will host Fifa World Cup 2022.

Ryder Cup – The Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf played between teams from Europe and the United States. The cup is named after the English businessman Samuel Ryder who donated the trophy.  Originally, the competition was played between Great Britain and the United States.

Thomas Cup – The Thomas cup is also known as the World Men’s Team Championships. It is an international badminton tournament played between the member countries of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The tournament started in the year 1949 and Indonesia is the most successful team having won the tournament 14 times.

Durand Cup – The Durand cup is associated with Football. It is an annual domestic football competition in India. It was started in the year 1888 in Annadale, Shimla. The tournament is hosted by the Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS). The tournament is named in the honour of  Sir Mortimer Durand, Foreign Secretary of British India from 1884 to 1894.
