History of the World AIDS Day

The idea to celebrate World AIDS Day first came to the mind of James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter in August 1987. Bunn and Netter were public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. They took their idea to the Director of the Global Programme on AIDS, Dr. Jonathan Mann who liked and approved the concept. December 1 was selected as the day of observation as it was believed to provide maximum coverage by Western news media as it fell after the US elections but before the Christmas holidays. The first World AIDS Day was observed on 1 December 1988. The Global Programme on AIDS is now known as UNAIDS.
