The actual history of observation of World Immunization Day is not known like how and when it began. But here we can learn about a brief history of immunization and the discovery of the practice of vaccination which dates back to as early as the 15^th century. Around the 15^th century (although some sources even suggest 200 BCE), people attempted to prevent illness by getting healthy individuals exposed to smallpox so that they developed immunity to it. Known as variolation, this practice became the basis of vaccination.

In 1976, an 8-year-old James Phipps was introduced to some cowpox virus collected from a milkmaid by English physician Edward Jenner. Phipps suffered a local reaction and became slightly unwell for a little while before making a full recovery. Two months after this, James was once again introduced to a human smallpox virus which miraculously did not affect his health. Thus, vaccination was invented with Dr. Jenner becoming the creator of the first successful vaccine and James the first human to be vaccinated.
