India celebrates World Students Day every year on on October 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President of India A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Kalam was a renowned scientist with DRDO & ISRO (two premiere government agencies of India) and also served India as its 11th president from 2002 to 2007. As a president and a person, he was deeply loved by the people of India and fondly called the ‘People’s President’.

World Students Day Significance

The life of president Kalam was a struggle and inspiration in itself and people, especially students can learn a lot from it. Despite being an average kid in school, Kalam went on to become a highly respected scientist and then the president of India. It was only through dreams and hard work that he was able to accomplish such a great privilege in his life.

During his career as a scientist, Kalam earned the name Missile Man of India owing to the historic developments he made. When he became the president,  he touched the hearts of the people and earned the nickname People’s President. He was a supporter of dreams and always encouraged students to dream and work hard to turn the dream to reality just like he did. To celebrate the many achievements of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and to inspire students to be more like him, India observes World Students Day on his birth anniversary, i.e., October 15.

History of Abdul Kalam and World Students Day

Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu to a boat owner and a housewife. The family was stricken with poverty and did not have much facilities growing up. Kalam was the youngest of four brothers and one sister in his family and an average grader, but hardworking and bright student. Kalam completed his graduation in Physics from Saint Joseph’s College and took a degree in aerospace from Madras Institute of Technology. In continuation with hard work, he completed his graduation and joined the defense organization Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

Kalam also worked as a scientist at Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) where he was involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. In 2002, Kalam became the 11th President of India. Kalam died on 27 July 2015 due to cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at IIM, Shillong. In Kalam’s honor, his birth anniversary October 15 was adopted to be celebrated as World Students Day every year in India.
