Paper Jam But
No Paper? Epson Fix!
Your Epson says there’s a paper jam โ but you’ve checked and there’s nothing there. Here’s exactly why it happens and how to fix it.
Why Does Epson Say “Paper Jam” When There Is No Paper?
Epson printers use multiple paper sensors along the feed path to detect paper presence and movement. When your printer reports a jam but you find nothing, one of these sensors is being triggered by a tiny hidden scrap, dust on the sensor, a dirty roller, or โ less commonly โ a faulty sensor. The printer is not wrong; it is detecting something real, even if invisible to a quick glance.
Until the sensor reads a clear paper path, the printer will refuse every print job โ displaying the jam error on repeat regardless of how many times you restart it.
This phantom jam most often follows a real paper jam where a small scrap was left behind, or after printing thick or glossy paper that leaves residue on the rollers.
How This Problem Presents
Why the Phantom Jam Error Keeps Appearing
Tiny Paper Scrap Hidden in the Feed Path
After a real jam, small torn pieces โ sometimes just a few millimetres โ remain lodged deep inside the feed rollers or around a bend in the paper path where they are invisible without a flashlight and thorough inspection.
Dirty or Worn Paper Feed Rollers
Rollers coated in paper dust, ink residue, or dried ink fail to grip paper correctly, causing slippage that triggers the jam sensor. Worn rollers with a glazed surface have the same effect.
Dust or Debris on the Paper Sensor
The paper detection sensor โ a small optical or mechanical lever inside the paper path โ can be blocked by dust, a paper fibre, or dried ink, causing it to report a jam even when the path is completely clear.
Wrong Paper Type or Overloaded Tray
Paper that is too thick, curled, damp, or loaded above the maximum fill line can misfeed and trigger the jam sensor before the sheet reaches the rollers โ or cause multiple sheets to feed at once.
Foreign Object Inside the Printer
Staples, paper clips, sticky note adhesive strips, or small objects that fell into the paper tray can lodge in the feed mechanism and permanently trigger the jam sensor without being easy to spot.
Faulty or Stuck Paper Sensor
In rare cases โ particularly on older or heavily used printers โ the paper sensor lever can become stuck in the “paper present” position, causing a permanent phantom jam that persists even after thorough cleaning.
How to Fix the Phantom Paper Jam on Epson Printers
๐ก Key Rule Before You Start
Always power off and unplug before reaching inside. Never pull paper backward against the feed direction โ always pull in the direction paper would normally travel. Pulling against the rollers tears paper and leaves fragments behind, making the problem worse.
Power Off and Unplug Completely
Turn the printer off, then unplug from the wall. Wait 60 seconds. This resets all sensors and clears any software-held error state before you begin the physical inspection.
Inspect Every Panel with a Flashlight
Open the front cover, rear access panel, and scanner lid. Shine a flashlight deep into the paper path. Look specifically for tiny torn scraps, staples, or paper clips โ not just full sheets.
Remove Hidden Paper Fragments
Use tweezers to carefully extract any scrap you find. Pull gently in the direction of paper travel โ never backward. Even a 1cm fragment is enough to trigger the sensor continuously.
Blow Out with Compressed Air
Use a can of compressed air to blow through the paper path from the rear access panel. This dislodges dust, fine fibres, and tiny fragments invisible to the eye near the sensor.
Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water only. Wipe each roller firmly while rotating it by hand. Allow to dry fully โ at least 10 minutes โ before powering back on.
Run Epson’s Roller Cleaning Cycle
On the panel: Setup โ Maintenance โ Paper Guide Cleaning. Load plain A4 when prompted. The printer feeds and ejects paper multiple times to clean the rollers automatically.
Check Paper Type and Reload the Tray
Remove all paper, fan the stack to separate sheets, and check for curled, damp, or oversized paper. Reload with fresh plain paper below the maximum fill indicator line.
Reset Printer to Factory Defaults
On the panel: Setup โ Restore Default Settings โ All Settings โ Yes. Clears any software-level jam flag that persisted in the printer’s memory after the physical cause was removed.
How to Manually Clean Epson Feed Rollers
โ ๏ธ Always Unplug First
Never clean rollers with the printer powered on. Moving parts can activate unexpectedly. Unplug the power cord fully before opening any panel or touching internal components.
Manual Roller Cleaning โ Step by Step
Tools needed: lint-free cloth, distilled water, flashlight, tweezers
Power off and open the rear access panel
Unplug the printer and open the rear paper access door. This gives you the best access to the main feed rollers.
Locate the rubber feed rollers
The feed rollers are the rubber cylinders the paper passes over. They may look shiny, glazed, or coated in grey paper dust if they need cleaning.
Dampen a lint-free cloth โ not soaking wet
Use distilled water only. The cloth should be damp to the touch, not wet enough to drip. Excess moisture inside the printer can damage electronic components.
Wipe each roller while rotating it by hand
Press the cloth against the roller and rotate it slowly by hand to clean the full circumference. Repeat until no more grey residue transfers to the cloth.
Allow to dry fully โ at least 10 minutes
Leave the rear panel open and let all rollers air dry completely before closing the printer and plugging back in. Powering on with damp rollers causes further feed issues.
Run a test print on plain A4 paper
Load 5โ10 sheets of plain A4 and print a test page. The first sheet or two may feed slightly unevenly while the rollers settle โ this is normal.
Prevent Phantom Jams from Happening Again
Frequently Asked Questions
I cannot see anything inside โ how do I know if there is a paper scrap?
Use your phone’s torch or a dedicated flashlight and inspect slowly from every angle โ front, rear, and through the cartridge door. Pay close attention to bends and rollers where small scraps curl and hide. If you still see nothing, use compressed air to blow through โ a scrap will often fall out.
The jam error came back after I cleared everything and printed fine once โ why?
Dirty or glazed rollers are the most likely culprit. They gripped the first sheet fine but slipped on the next. Run the built-in roller cleaning cycle (Fix 06) or manually clean the rollers using the deep clean guide above.
Can I use isopropyl alcohol to clean the rollers?
Epson recommends distilled water only for roller cleaning. Isopropyl alcohol can dry out and degrade the rubber roller surface over time, making gripping worse and shortening roller life. Stick to distilled water for best results.
My Epson EcoTank keeps getting phantom jams โ is this a known issue?
Yes. Several EcoTank models โ particularly the ET-2760 and ET-3760 โ have a known tendency toward phantom jam errors caused by dust accumulating on the paper sensor lever. A thorough compressed air clean of the sensor area through the rear panel usually resolves it permanently.
When to Contact Epson Support
If the phantom jam error continues after all eight fixes and the deep roller clean, the paper sensor itself may be faulty or physically stuck. Contact Epson support in these situations:
