Can’t Connect Epson
Printer to Mobile?
Complete fix guide for connecting your Epson printer to iPhone, Android, and tablet โ via WiFi, Epson Smart Panel, and Wi-Fi Direct.
Why Can’t You Connect Epson Printer to Mobile?
Mobile printing with Epson works over WiFi, Wi-Fi Direct, or Bluetooth (on select models). The most common reason it fails is that the phone and printer are on different networks โ or the phone is on 5GHz while the printer is on 2.4GHz. The Epson Smart Panel app, AirPrint (iOS), and Mopria (Android) all require the phone and printer to be discoverable to each other on the same local network.
The most common symptom โ your phone’s print dialog simply doesn’t show the Epson printer in the list, even though the printer is on and connected to WiFi.
Epson printers support AirPrint for iPhone/iPad and Mopria/Epson Smart Panel for Android. Both methods are covered in this guide with step-by-step setup instructions.

Why Your Phone Can’t Find the Epson Printer
Phone and Printer on Different Networks
The printer is connected to 2.4GHz WiFi while the phone is on 5GHz โ or connected to a completely different network (e.g. phone data vs home WiFi). Mobile printing requires both devices on the exact same local network to discover each other.
Epson Smart Panel App Not Installed or Outdated
Epson Smart Panel is the dedicated app for mobile printing and scanning. Without it โ or with an outdated version โ many Epson printers will not appear in the phone’s print dialog or will fail to communicate during setup.
AirPrint Not Available or Disabled
On iPhone and iPad, Epson printers print via AirPrint. If the printer’s firmware is outdated, AirPrint may not be supported or may be disabled โ making the printer invisible to iOS’s native print function.
Router AP Isolation Blocking Discovery
Access Point (AP) Isolation is a router security feature that prevents devices on the same network from seeing each other. When enabled, your phone literally cannot detect the printer even if both are on the same WiFi.
Printer Not Connected to WiFi at All
If the printer’s WiFi light is off or flashing, it has lost its network connection. A printer that is not on WiFi cannot be discovered by any mobile device regardless of which app or method is used.
Phone Permissions Blocking Discovery
iOS and Android both require location permissions for apps to scan the local network for devices. If Epson Smart Panel has been denied location access, it cannot discover the printer โ even if everything else is configured correctly.
Connect Epson to iPhone or iPad via AirPrint
๐ No App Required for AirPrint
AirPrint is built into every iPhone and iPad running iOS 9 or later. You do not need to install anything โ just make sure the printer is connected to the same WiFi network as your iPhone and the printer supports AirPrint (most Epson models from 2013 onward do).
AirPrint โ iPhone & iPad
Built-in iOS printing โ no app needed
Connect iPhone to the same WiFi as the printer
Go to Settings โ WiFi on your iPhone. Confirm it is connected to the same 2.4GHz network as your Epson printer โ not 5GHz or mobile data.
Open the document or photo you want to print
Open any file in Photos, Safari, Mail, or any app that supports printing. Tap the Share button (box with arrow) or the three-dot menu.
Tap Print from the share menu
Scroll down in the share sheet and tap Print. The Printer Options screen will open.

Connect via Wi-Fi Direct (No Router Needed)
Wi-Fi Direct โ iPhone & Android
Phone connects directly to printer โ works without a router
Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer
On the printer panel go to Setup โ WiFi Setup โ Wi-Fi Direct Setup โ Enable. The printer will display a Direct SSID name and password on screen.
Setup โ WiFi Setup โ Wi-Fi Direct Setup โ EnableConnect your phone to the printer’s Direct network
On your phone go to Settings โ WiFi. You will see a new network starting with “DIRECT-“ followed by your printer model. Connect to it using the password shown on the printer screen.
Open Epson Smart Panel and select the printer
Once connected to the Direct network, open Epson Smart Panel. The printer will appear automatically. Tap it to confirm the connection.
Print your document
Use Epson Smart Panel to print โ or use AirPrint (iPhone) which also works over a Wi-Fi Direct connection. Note that internet access is not available while connected to Wi-Fi Direct.
Reconnect to your home WiFi after printing
When done, go back to Settings โ WiFi on your phone and reconnect to your home network. You can disable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer when not needed to save power.
Printer Still Not Showing on Mobile? Try These
Put Phone and Printer on Same Network
Check your phone is on the same WiFi network and same band (2.4GHz) as the printer. Go to Settings โ WiFi and confirm. Switch off mobile data temporarily during setup.
Allow Location Permission for Smart Panel
Go to Settings โ Apps โ Epson Smart Panel โ Permissions (Android) or Settings โ Privacy โ Location โ Epson Smart Panel โ While Using (iOS). Location must be allowed for network discovery.
Restart Printer, Phone, and Router
Power off all three devices. Wait 60 seconds. Power the router on first, then the printer, then your phone. This refreshes all network connections and device discovery caches.
Disable AP Isolation on Your Router
Log into your router admin panel and look for AP Isolation, Client Isolation, or Device Isolation โ usually under WiFi or Security settings. Disable it. This setting silently blocks phone-to-printer discovery.
Update Epson Smart Panel App
Open Google Play or App Store, search Epson Smart Panel, and install any available update. Outdated app versions fail to discover printers on newer Android or iOS versions.
Update Printer Firmware for AirPrint
Visit epson.com/support and download the latest firmware for your model. Install via USB. Older firmware versions may not support AirPrint or may have bugs affecting mobile discovery.
Reinstall Epson Smart Panel
Uninstall the app fully, restart your phone, then reinstall Epson Smart Panel from scratch. Grant all permissions when prompted. A fresh install clears corrupt cached connection data.
Use Wi-Fi Direct as a Workaround
If home WiFi discovery keeps failing, enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer (Setup โ WiFi Setup โ Wi-Fi Direct) and connect your phone directly to the printer’s network โ bypassing your router entirely.
Check Printer WiFi Connection
On the printer panel go to Setup โ WiFi Setup โ WiFi Status. If it shows disconnected or no signal, re-run the WiFi setup wizard before attempting any mobile connection.
Keep Mobile Printing Working Reliably
Frequently Asked Questions
My Epson printer appears in Smart Panel but won’t print โ what’s wrong?
The printer is being discovered but the print job is failing. Check that the printer is not in an error state (no paper jam, no empty ink), that the print queue is clear, and that the printer is set as active and not paused. Restart both the printer and the app, then try a simple one-page test print first.
Can I print from my phone without WiFi using Epson Wi-Fi Direct?
Yes. Wi-Fi Direct creates a direct connection between your phone and printer without needing a router. Enable it on the printer via Setup โ WiFi Setup โ Wi-Fi Direct, then connect your phone to the printer’s Direct network in your phone’s WiFi settings. Note that you will not have internet access while connected to Wi-Fi Direct.
Why does my iPhone find the printer sometimes but not other times?
This is typically caused by the printer’s IP address changing between sessions. Assign a static IP to the printer in your router admin panel, and the printer will always be at the same address โ making AirPrint discovery consistent every time.
Does Epson Smart Panel work on tablets too?
Yes. Epson Smart Panel is fully compatible with iPad (iOS 14 or later) and Android tablets. The setup process is identical to phones โ same app, same WiFi requirements, same permissions. AirPrint also works on iPad natively through the Share menu.
When to Contact Epson Support
If all nine fixes and all three setup methods have been attempted and your phone still cannot connect to the printer, the issue may be a hardware or firmware fault with the printer’s wireless module. Contact Epson support in these situations:
